History: For a solid explaination of Bloodborne's overall plot: this video gives a fantastic overview. Maria, in particular, is apart of the Astral Clocktower segment of the Old Hunters DLC video here! For information on Maria in particular; Her wiki!
Maria was originally born an aristocrat in Castle Cainhurst, a neighboring land to Yharnam. A distant relative to the Queen Annalise, she grew up among excess and riches unfathomable to a commoner. Cainhurst was know for it's extravagant use of Old Blood, which the nobility would imbibe for it's intoxicating effects. Maria had a distaste for the use of Blood in such a way. She left the castle, traveling to the nearby city of Yharnam. In Yharnam was the Healing Church, which held absolute control of the city. The Church practiced Blood Ministration, use the same Old Blood for healing rather than enjoyment. Powerful as the healing blood was, the intoxicating and addictive nature of it overwhelmed the church and citizens of Yharnam. The people of Yharnam began to become afflicted with side effects of the blood. Ashen Blood, a maddening toxin in the body, overwhelmed the populace of Old Yharnam. This section of the city fell quickly to the sickness and was sealed off, burned to cinders while the rest of Yharnam hid away. This did not stop the madness caused by use of the Old Blood: soon a Scourge broke out across all of Yharnam. The population began turning into monstrous, ravenous Beasts. Worst of all, those most dedicated to the church became the most mad and wild of the Beasts.
She did not sit idly by during this catastrophe. Maria joined a newly organized group of skilled fighters, the Hunters. These individuals were contracted by the Healing Church to slay the beastly scourge wherever it sprung up. They were protectors of the people and traveled out from the Church to protect the citizens of Yharnam. Maria was a close student to Gherman, the first hunter. She studied at the Hunters Workshop and was skilled in the art of Quickening, where in a warrior could move as if a shadow in the flickering of a torch. One of the best at her trade, she became curious about the true nature of the Beasts and their origins and sought answers within the Church.
Her curiosity led her to the Choir, a segment of the Healing Church separated from the Hunters of the Workshop dedicated to research and tending to the sick. She looked after and tended to the patients and research subjects, acting as a caretaker to them. Many of the patients being experimented on were attempting to reach a higher plane of thought, that of the Old Ones; while their thoughts ascended, their bodies were transformed into hideous monsters. Although Maria’s true purpose within the Choir was to execute patients who could not be controlled, her sympathy and motherly care transformed her into the beloved “Lady Maria”. During this period, Maria learned much more of the Church’s history than the average hunter. The more she learned about blood experimentation, the more disgusted she became.
Despite her disgust, Maria continued to search ever deeper and deeper into the origins of the hunt. Her search led her to what once was a small fishing village; there she discovered the body of a dead Old One, reverently referred to as Mother Kos by the locals. The village was the site of an atrocity committed by the School of Byrgenworth. The scholars had come to the village seeking the Eldritch Truth and had violated it with their horrible experiments, which brought about the Curse of Mother Kos. Maria, disturbed and disgusted by her findings, cast her beloved blade, Rakuyo, into a dark well.
After this, Maria was not spared from the Hunt. The blood she spilled and used to heal her wounds eventually drove her to madness. Maria became "drunk with blood", a term used to describe hunters whom lost themselves to the thrill of the hunt. She is not certain how she died, the memory lost to her, but she is aware that she died in the arms of her teacher Gehrman. When she succumbed to death, her consciousness became trapped in the Nightmare Realm of Kos, specifically in the Astal Clocktower.
The Astral Clocktower was a nightmare inspired by the Church, a horrible realm twisted out of Maria's own experiences searching out the Eldrich Truth. Once a caretaker of the woman of the research hall, all that remained in the hall was the worst of the monstrosities and the few saints who become fully enveloped by their own brains. A warped version of the Research Hall lies within the Hunter's Nightmare. The Research Hall was a corrupted place in the waking world, a place tainted heavily but the disgusting experiments of the Church. The Nightmare needed not enhance the place, to create a terrible prison for Maria. She took refuge at the top of the Clocktower, allowing the experiments and living failures to roam freely. She sits in isolation, waiting for any foolish enough to seek what lies beyond the Clocktower. Beyond her, after all, is the Nightmares core and the realm above all others; the violated Fishing Village, along with the corpse of Mother Kos.
To her, some secrets were better left protected.
Personality: The first impression one would have of Maria is that she is a distant person. Her expressions are glassy, passions muted and withheld. She speaks formally, carefully and with thought. Maria is the type to listen attentive and quiet to another person's pleas and worries. Her level nature has always been a benefit to her, she's not fearful nor fretful. While her reserve might come across to some as cold, Maria is very sympathetic and protective of those she meets, especially those she considers innocent in nature. If she believes a person cannot protect themselves, she will do everything in her power to do so for them.
Though excellent in high pressure situations, Maria is poor at reading those she is close to. Once a person has earned her trust, Maria is very loyal to them. She takes people less at their word and more by their actions. This had made her naive in the past, as she never fully realized her teacher's deep affection for her. Since her death, many hunters have traveled to the Hunter's Nightmare to attempt passage beyond the Clocktower. Maria does not looking beyond a person's actions and consider what their motivations or desires might be. She will not be reasoned with, if she believes one is acting with ill intent.
Lady Maria is driven by her sense of honor and her commitments. If she has sworn herself to an ideal, she pursues and acts with uttermost fervor to accomplish the task at hand. Honor is an all or nothing concept, to Maria. She will respect an individual upon first meeting, but her esteem is easily lost. Respect is not a term of endearment, to Maria, as she is not an affectionate person. She seeks to neither receive or give love, only compassion, as that is a trait she considers honorable. Maria is non-romantic and quite oblivious to such ideals, finding them false and pretentious. Flirting either slides off her back or offends her, depending on the presentation. She had never noticed Gehrman's affections for her, despite dying in his arms.
Due to the events she experienced in Yharnam, Maria is not easy to surprise. She can adjust incredibly quickly to the absurd and disturbing. Having cared for the woman of the Research Hall, their heads expanding until that was all they were, Maria isn't easily disgusted. Disgust is not an immediate reaction of Maria's, it takes time to sink in and only after the feeling festers, does she act out against it. Generally, though, Maria can find pity in even the most grotesque of creatures. Oddities that lack the visceral, abhorrent nature of the Beasts are more a charming curiosity than a disturbance to her. Violent creatures are what she cannot abide by, under any circumstance. She will kill anything that presents itself as dangerous to herself or others.
Abilities/Skills:
Weapon Proficiency: Maria is very proficient in a variety of Hunter's Weaponry, which are a majority melee weapons (swords, scythes, axes, etc.) and additionally old-time firearms such as canons, blunderbuss, and muskets. She would not have any proficiency with modern day weaponry such as automatic guns.
Blood Frenzy: Maria gradually becomes fiercer and quicker the more she has bled. This works in three stages, gradually making her stronger until she cannot sustain herself any more and would die of blood loss. This state makes her function well beyond what a normal person could while heavily injured.
She does not have any kind of inherent or enhanced healing, however. In her universe, she would use veils of Healing Blood from Yharnam or Cainhurst to quickly recover from this state. Without these or some other way to quickly recover, Maria would succumb to blood loss like any regular human would.
Quickening: Maria is able to disappear and reappear at short distances, in short bursts of shadow. While she moves like this, attacks travel through her shadowy form without damaging or hindering her in any way. She can be struck immediately coming out of these movements, but they are very quick and difficult to predict the direction she will be dashing. This does not increase the strength of her attacks, only her physical quickness and evasion. She cannot wind up or charge an attack, while dashing.
Rakuyo: The sword she uses requires a high level of dexterity. She will not arrive with it, but it has it's own unique properties and abilities that she can potentially harness. Namely, when it is drenched in blood she can use that to cause projectile blood waves, which are highly damaging. In her most blood frenzied state, she can then cause those waves of blood to explode into fire. It is stated she has a distaste for using this weapon and cast it away once before.

Wish: "To put an end to Nightmares."
Maria sat lifeless in her chair, trapped in an endless wait. She could not dream, only rest as if a corpse. Her existence was tortuously numb, mind and emotions rotting in her despair. The hatred she held towards the Nightmare was all she could hold onto. Her consciousness had become trapped because of the Curse of Mother Kos, unable to pass on or simply cease. She wished to destroy all that was around her, sever the curse, and free her companions from the sins of the Byrgenworth scholars. Kyuubim need not twist her words in the slightest, she wished to destroy Nightmares in all their forms. Maria would endlessly do battle against new evil, it was what she knew and it was what could drive her for an eternity, if required. Anything to escape the imprisoning wait of the Astral Clocktower.
Passive ability:
Blood Frenzy: Maria gradually becomes fiercer and quicker in her offense, the more she has bled during a fight against a Nightmare. This works in three stages, gradually making her stronger up to a cap. Only available to her when she's doing direct battle with a Nightmare or Witch, per her wish.
Active ability:
Quickening: Maria is able to disappear and reappear at short distances, in short bursts of shadow. While she moves like this, attacks travel through her shadowy form without damaging or hindering her in any way. She can be struck between these movements, but they are very quick and difficult to predict the direction she will be dashing. This does not increase the strength of her attacks, only her physical quickness and evasion. She cannot wind up or charge an attack, while dashing.
This ability was granted due to it's connection to a Nightmare itself. Maria came from a Nightmare, was apart of it once. She can melt her body into it, disappearing and reappearing into the very fabric of the dreamscape itself. The immunity she enjoys while she dashes is because at that moment she is apart of the Nightmare. Damage thrown at her would simply be absorbed back or dissipate into the Nightmare. This kind of intimacy with the Nightmare may be short, but it takes an increasing toll of her Soul Gem the more she uses it in a single instance. If she uses it too much, or dashes for too long of a distance, she risks the Nightmare swallowing her.
Weapon:
Her Rakuyo, which she cast into the well of the fishing village. Returned to her in the Nightmare, this blade is a trick weapon with two forms. When connected, it appears as a double bladed sword, handle off centered. It can break apart at the handle into a long, thin blade for the main hand and a shorter, broader sword for the offhand.

Personality:
The first impression one would have of Maria is that she is a distant person.
Maria is driven by her sense of honor and her commitments.
